His expertise includes business law, agribusiness, elder care, education law and dispute resolution together with a criminal law practice. Michael also has a significant estate and asset planning client base.
Michael’s experience includes:
- Commercial advice in all aspects of agribusiness including the purchase, financing, leasing of rural land and the structuring of agribusiness enterprises
- Development of complex estate and asset plans (succession planning), particularly in relation to agribusiness enterprises and commercial property investors
- Advising private companies and equity investors in the acquisition of aged care facilities and their financing
- Advice on, and establishment of, irrigation company structures, easement and encumbrance documentation
- Providing criminal law advice and representation in the Youth Court, District Court and High Court, and
- Providing advice to primary and secondary schools in all aspects of education law including staff, employment, compliance and student disciplinary issues
A born and bred South Islander, Michael is very involved in community affairs. He is honorary solicitor to numerous organisations including the IHC (Oamaru Branch), Oamaru Club Inc, St Vincent de Paul Society Oamaru, Oamaru Steam & Rail Restoration Society, Excelsior Rugby & Associated Sports Club and the Oamaru Rowing Club.
Previously a director of the Highlanders Super 14 franchise, currently he is a director of Whitestone Contracting Ltd and NZ Law Ltd.
In his spare time, Michael is a keen golfer, enjoys tramping, following the Highlanders avidly, and gardens when time permits.
